We, the members of the “Joseph Dutton Guild”, are a group of Catholic men and women of Hawaii who have petitioned Bishop Larry Silva, Bishop of Honolulu, to initiate the Cause of Canonization of the Servant of God Joseph Dutton, the layman who worked for many years on the Island of Molokai together with Saint Damien De Veuster and Saint Marianne Cope.
The Guild was created also to support and promote God’s plan of love and service to the poor and abandoned, and to put that love into action here in Hawaii and around the world.
With the grace of God and through our awareness, devotion, and support, our mission is to promote the Cause of Canonization of the Servant of God Joseph Dutton that will lead, if it be God’s will, to the beatification and canonization of the Servant of God.
We are also seeking to make people more aware of the dedication and service of the Servant of God Joseph Dutton to the poor and abandoned, thus encouraging them to imitate his lively faith and active charity.
The Joseph Dutton Guild strives to be of service and assistance in all those things of the process that may lead to the eventual canonization of the Servant of God Joseph Dutton, Layman of Molokai.
Moreover, we seek to connect people by bringing to them an awareness of their particular Christian vocation, and so thus to enable them to share in the common vision of the Saints for continued growth in their relationship to Jesus Christ as they serve others.
The decision to proceed to the canonization of an individual requires the definitive
approval of the Holy Father. The whole process, however, is driven by faithful Catholics
in the pews. Canonization requires a demonstration that the popular devotion to the
candidate (called a reputation of holiness) has extended and grown in the Church over a
period of time. Graces, favors and miracles, granted by God through the intercession of
the candidate for canonization (called a reputation of intercessory power), are considered
as divine proof that this popular devotion is the fruit of the work of the Holy Spirit in the
hearts and minds of the faithful.
